Written by Niamh Murphy

FUEL YOUR WINTER STOKE

aND get inspired by these must watch movie picks.

We asked our athlete team to share what they’ve been watching recently to fuel their winter stoke through the shoulder season.

From skiing and snowboarding picks, to running documentaries and binge worthy YouTube series, there’s something for everyone on this list.

So put your feet up, throw some beers in the fridge and settle in for a cozy evening with some inspirational and gut wrenching movies.

Find out more about our athlete team here.

Dark Matter (2019)

Dark Matter (2019)

Athlete

Roger Carry

Grab yourself a Campout® West Coast Pale and checkout Travis Rice’s 2019 movie “Dark Matter” (Amazon Prime TV).

Even though I’m a skier I’ll happily recognize anyone who can make ripping Alaskan spines look as easy as Travis and company… But if you are one of those skiers who can’t get excited about snowboarders then checkout Sammy Carlson’s latest video “Resilience” (YouTube). It’s eight minutes of the best skiing you’ll see all year. Plus I’ll give an honourable mention to Life of Kai (RedBull TV).

Huck Yeah! (2020)

Huck Yeah! (2020)

Athlete

I’m currently stoked on Huck Yeah! the new one from Matchstick Productions.

This movie is a crowd favourite and is special to me as I have friends in the film; Jenelle Yip, Emily Childs, and Tonje Kvivik aka The Blondes! I’m so stoked to see them ski big lines and throw big tricks! They’re rad female athletes and sweet people. The name of the film makes me think of the beloved Fernie beer What The Huck® Huckleberry Ale. I would say a perfect pair!

Valhalla (2013)

Kel Duplain

Valhalla is my pick!

I tend to binge watch shred-flix and that’s the one I watch when I get bored of the regular ones and want more of a story to it. It has both boarding and skiing, a good narration, fun characters and a sick naked pow segment! Valhalla paired with a First Trax® Brown Ale by the fireplace is a sure-fire win.

Check it out on Red Bull here.

Where Dreams Go To Die (2018)

Abi Moore

For some type 2 fun, this ultrarunning documentary, Where Dreams Go to Die (YouTube), about Garry Robbins will make your choice to stay on the couch seem much more sensible.

Gary Robbins is a Canadian utrarunning legend, and this fun film by Ethan Newberry, covers his grueling effort(s) during Gary’s two attempts at completing The Barkley Marathons – a 100+ mile event many consider the toughest endurance run on Earth.

Best watched following the Barkley Marathons documentary, The Race that Eats its Young (Amazon Prime Video), which is quite simply, insane.

This film pairs best with a Java the Hut™ Coffee Milk Stout – hearty, dark and caffeinated. You’re gonna need it.

The FIFTY (2019)

I’m going to have to go with two picks for this.

1 . Cody Townsend’s The FIFTY

Last winter I got hooked on Cody Townsend’s The FIFTY project YouTube series, which follows Cody as he attempts to climb and ski all 50 peaks outlined in the book “The Fifty Classic Descents of North America”. Cody strikes the perfect balance of education and stoke in these videos. Definitely would recommend to anyone trying to get in the backcountry!

2.  Streif: One Hell of a Ride

This movie focuses on the single biggest event in World Cup Ski Racing – the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Now bear with me here, it gets pretty weird and cheesy at times, but it’s an awesome dive into fear, consequence, and pushing your limits, something I think any athlete or aspiring athlete can relate to. Check it out on Red Bull.

There’s only one pairing choice for these two, the Thunder Meadows™ IPA.

Chapter 11 (2016)

Chapter 11 (2016)

Athlete

Dre Byrne

I spend a lot of time behind my sewing machine which means I watch a lot of Netflix and movies. Multitasking is my middle name!

A few of my favourites are: Chapter 11 featuring pro surfer Dane Reynolds (Vimeo). I love this short film because I think it encompasses the reality of professional sport beyond what people see. It’s a highly relatable film and really resonates with me.

Huck Yeah! from MSP is one that gets me fired up! It features many of my friends that I’ve known since I started competitive skiing and seeing them crush it makes me so proud and happy for them! Nothing like watching your friends live their wildest dreams!

Also Blue Crush (Amazon Prime Video). A classic oldie and forever favourite haha. As someone who has always worked in hospitality/tourism, this movie is up there with my all-time favourites. It’s kinda cheesy but I feel like so many athletes work so hard and it goes unnoticed. This movie puts the hard work we put in as athletes upfront. Also a highly relatable flick for females in sport.

Pair these with The Real Peel® Grapefruit IPA (if you can find one) for that summertime citrus zing.

Backcountry (2015)

Backcountry (2015)

Athlete

Karina Gould

I recently enjoyed watching Backcountry (Amazon Prime Video).

This hiking and backpacking movie was based on true events about a bear attack that occurred in 2005 in Canada. Watching this movie and how the events played out definitely puts the reality of how important it is to be prepared when heading into the mountains, whether it’s for a day trip or backpacking overnight. The worst case scenario isn’t likely to occur, but being prepared for it is an absolute must as anything can happen in the outdoors.

The Professor™ Amber Lager is perfect to sip on while you watch this, as at this time of year the smooth darker beers definitely hit the spot!

backyard boogie too (2020)

backyard boogie too (2020)

Athlete

Dylan Siggers

This fall there has been so much good stuff to choose from, so here’s my top three:

betty ford. from Beyond Medals (YouTube). Expect impeccable style and solid tunes.

Halcyon with Sage Kotsenburg (YouTube). Olympian turned backcountry junkie.. Makes for some great watching.

Backyard Boogie Töö by Grif Seibs (YouTube). Grif said it best himself, “I am in constant pursuit to capture that feeling you get riding with your friends on a powder day, or enjoying a fun session on a hand-built sidehit. It is that feeling that keeps drawing us back to the snowy mountains,” enjoy!

All great snowboarding vids! Crush them all back to back alongside a few of the Finish Line™ Hazy Pale with Lime.
